Was thinking of doing a camping weekend up in Holcomb Valley in BB next month, not the 4th weekend but probably the weekend after. Maybe take the jeeps out on a exploratory run checking out old mine sites and a arrastre. Just tooling around and having a relaxed fun weekend.
Anyone interested post up and lets make plans

* July 16th-18th, unless maybe you are planning on an extended vacation
YP5 Looks nice:
YP5 is located on 2N84A at N34° 17. 579 W116° 57.652 7400'
YP5 is My Jeep Rocks Adopt-A-Trail camp.
Room for 6 tents. Some shade. Small RVs could make it. Down a spur road.

Or YP1:
YP1 is located on 2N04X at N34° 15. 995 W116° 57.105
A view of Big Bear Lake! Lots of shade. Room for a few tents. Down a spur road.
Not RV friendly.

Or over on the other side of the lake, YP30:
YP30 is located on 2N86 at N34° 13.950 W116° 58.805
Lots of shade. Room for many tents. Down a spur road.
Not RV friendly. While camping there last year our campsite was ransacked by a bear.

Have brought in a Camper to the YP on 2n84 before, however is that road closed due to the fire a few years back? Killer area to be in
Then there is a YP close to Tanglewood, other side of 3n16.
RV friendly? thought we were going to be doing adventure trailer stuff.
ou know the one on 2n86 looks like a blast also, plus we may get to see a bear

I like the idea of seeing a bear. RV friendly vs. unfriendly wasn't really an issue for me one way or the other, mostly I was looking for nice looking campsites with at least some shade. Seems like some of them look more like this:

BTW, had dinner with Mike & Denny last night - they are in.

Checked the SBNF website today and couldn't find any indication that 2n84 is closed, but you probably know more about that than I do from you work in the area.

I agree, YP 30 looks like a nice site. If we're all OK being over on that side of the lake I'm good with it.
Jodi pointed out that I may have caused some confusion - the YP descriptions were cut and pasted from a compilation of YP descriptions on another site, not written by me. You may know him Jim, it's FishPoet on MJR.

ok, YP 30
I think we will head up Friday morning and make sure we get it, if not we need a backup. Also are we doing a menu, or any plans for adult beverages.
My only problem is no spicy stuff s my tongue is still healing from surgery. I could do another stew for Friday of Saturday.

I'll bet that does feel strange. Hopefully you don't have that strange feeling for too long.
Unfortunately it turns out Jodi needs to support installation of some new software at work that Friday, so we'll be leaving pretty late. Her guess is 7-8:00 PM, which would put us in camp about 9:30-10:00 or so. I'll try to check with Mike & Denny about their schedule over the weekend.
Haven't talked much about the menu yet. Let me kick around some ideas with Jodi and we'll let you know. She's got a new recipe for margaritas that is really killer, so I'm guessing she will bring some of those - can your tongue handle the acidity? Other than that I suspect we'll be bringing some beer and wine.
Probably the best way to talk via ham on the way in is through either the Big Bear or Keller Peak repeaters. I have both programmed into my radio, so either one works for me. We can pick a simplex frequency for once we get closer. If you get in cell coverage sometime after you secure the site you can also give us a call or send a message. I'll need to coordinate with Mike and Denny on the location also.
There are a few other YP sites over on that side of the lake in case YP30 is full. When I get a chance I'll dig up the info on those and post those here so we can use those as alternates if needed.

Well it is menu time
I was thinking about Cowboy Dinner Saturday night
we could do some cowboy beans, flank steaks and some kind of cowboy bread, very dutch oven friendly. I can look up a few cowboy bread recipes and we could split steak cost if anyone has a place to pick up flank steaks.
Any other suggestions?
oh and we will bring some sausage Dave's famous breakfast.

OK, here's some more info on Yellow Post sites on the south side of the lake.
Here's a nice overview map showing all the sites:

Even though the map shows a YP25, I believe that one no longer exists.
So:
YP30 looks very nice, and I posted info about that one earlier. Probably our 1st choice.
YP28 looks OK (Pic and info below):

YP28 is located on 2N11 at N34° 12.805 W116° 58.783
Large area for parking. Room for a few tents. Down a spur road.
Some shade.
YP26 would probably work. Sounds like it has room, but short on shade (the trailer does have an awning):

YP26 is located on 2N52Y at N34° 13.027 W116° 56.694
Wide open area. Down a spur road (less traffic). Can fit a few tents or an RV.
Not much shade.
Next up is YP27. YP 27 sounds like it might be very nice (I can't find a pic). Sounds like the road would keep out folks with low clearance vehicles, but shouldn't be a problem for us.
YP27 is located on 2N10D at N34° 12.896 W116° 57.359
Lots of shade. A small creek is flowing near camp. Down a spur road. Room for a couple of tents.
Low profile cars will not make it all the way to camp. No RV's
Next we have YP29. Only concern might be whether there is enough room.

YP29 is located on 2N11 at N34° 12.950 W116° 58.650
Some shade. Down a spur road. Not much flat space for tents.
We'll get meat for Sat dinner. We'll see what the butcher has that looks good, either flank steak or carne asada. I'll make a berry cobbler for desert on Saturday. I'm working on adapting a home recipe for the dutch oven. I've tried it once at home and came out great.
We'll also bring the rest of the ingredients for the mountain man breakfast.
